Description of exhibition

The exhibition displays Zlatoust engraving on steel, a unique phenomenon in decorative and applied art. The exhibition will present 80 items of Zlatoust engraving on steel, including decorated cold steel and firearms, household items, and decorative panels.

Visitors will be able to see a blade from the mid-19th century made by the famous master Ivan Bushuev, the founder of the Zlatoust school. The artistic craft will also be represented by the works of Soviet master-engravers G.M. Bersenev, A.I. Boronnikov, L.N. Valiev, V.F. Tarynin, N.V. Lohtacheva, G.I. Manush and other authors.

The Zlatoust school of engraving originated at the Arms Factory, which opened in Zlatoust in 1815. Initially, Ural craftsmen ornamented a wide range of bladed weaponry, as well as household items made of steel. In a short period of time, Zlatoust has created its own distinct style of blade ornamentation, distinguished by the seal of outstanding craftsmanship. The Zlatoust school’s works are distinguished by complex plot compositions and expressiveness of artistic language of the authors.

The works of modern craftsmen and enterprises that specialise in the decoration of cold steel weapons and decorative items will demonstrate the evolution of the art of Zlatoust engraving.

The exhibition offers the opportunity to learn about the history of original art through the lens of museum objects.
