Description of Exhibition

This exhibition explores the history of Narovchat—a 14th-century mediaeval Golden Horde settlement, a unique archaeological heritage site, and a federally protected monument of history and culture known as the ‘Narovchat Fortified Settlement’, more commonly referred to as the ‘City of Mokhshi or Nurijan’.

The exhibition presents the full spectrum of urban life in Narovchat in all its diversity: the daily life and economy of its citizens, urban planning and architecture, trade contacts, and the operations of its mint.

The exhibits are drawn from the collections of the Penza State Museum of Regional Studies, the Narovchat District Museum-Reserve of Penza Oblast, the Museum of Archaeology of the Republic of Tatarstan at the A.Kh.  Khalikov Institute of Archaeology (Tatarstan Academy of Sciences), and the Kazan Kremlin Museum-Reserve.
