Description of exhibition

The Islamic Culture Museum at the Kazan Kremlin Museum-Reserve will host the opening of the exhibition ‘Calligraphy of Iraq: From Origins to Modernity’.

This project has been developed in partnership with the Russian House in Iraq. The Russian House in Iraq facilitates cultural and educational exchange programmes between Iraq and Russia.

For the first time in Russia, this exhibition will showcase 39 works by members of the Babylon Branch of the Iraqi Calligraphers Association, including pieces by: Jasim Hammoud Hussein al-Najafi, Jasim al-Tamimi, Qasim Taher Abbas al-Haffaji, Rasul Hamza Nasser al-Zarkani, Hudeir Sharad Karim al-Jabouri, and Haidar Ali Jabr Hussein al-Shaibani. These artists are master calligraphers, instructors of the art form, and winners of regional and international competitions. Their works hold pride of place in both museum and private collections.

The exhibition will feature calligraphic works in both classical and contemporary styles – from traditional ink and gold-leaf techniques on paper to modern interpretations using acrylic and copper foil on canvas. Many works showcase a fusion of classical Islamic calligraphic scripts alongside innovative experimentation with letter forms and textual composition.
