РАСПОЛОЖЕНИЕ

DESCRIPTION OF EXHIBITION

The exhibition is devoted to the Governor’s Palace Complex in Kazan Kremlin. Archival documents, engravings, paintings, and photographs, as well as antique furniture, archaeology, and a 16th-century coin hoard, are on display here. Everything that demonstrates the rich history of the building and its territory.

The Governor’s Palace was constructed in the Kazan Kremlin on the initiative of Russian Emperor Nicholas I. He had chosen the same location for the building where the Kazan khans’ palace once stood, emphasising the continuity of the region’s centre of power. That is why the part of the exhibition will be devoted to prehistory, specifically the Khan’s Courtyard of the Kazan Khanate and the Tsar’s Courtyard of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Governor’s Palace was built in the middle of the 19th century under the project of Konstantin Andreevich Ton, the creator of the historical Cathedral of the Christ the Saviour and the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow. The first official event within its walls occurred on August 22, 1851; this date can be considered the beginning of the building’s full life.

The Governor’s Palace of the Kazan Kremlin is of particular importance because it is one of the residences of the Russian Empire’s ruling dynasty. One of its floors housed an Emperor’s apartment designed for members of the House of Romanovs.

The palace building was also affected by the turbulent history of the twentieth century; it hosted government authorities of the Provisional Government, the Bolsheviks, and the USSR. During the Great Patriotic War, the palace served as a home for citizens who had been evacuated to Kazan.

Today, the Governor’s Palace is the Residence of the Rais (Head) of the Republic of Tatarstan. It continues to be a centre of power in the region, where the most important decisions for Tatarstan are made and guests are welcomed at the highest level. The renovated building, which retains its identity, draws the attention of both tourists and city residents.

To create the exhibition, exhibits were attracted from the collections of the Kazan Kremlin Museum-Reserve, the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan, the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Museum of Archaeology of the A.H.  Khalikov Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, the State Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for Archival Affairs, the A.V.  Shchusev State Scientific Research Museum of Architecture, the Nikolai Lobachevsky Scientific Library of Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University, and the Zaraisky Kremlin State Museum-Reserve.
