Description of exhibition

The exhibition includes 60 photographs from the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society’s photo collection dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. These photographs, stored in the State Museum of the History of Religion, depict Muslims’ daily lives and holy sites revered by Christians and Muslims alike.

Photographs by Bruno Genshil, Ivan Barshchevsky, and Bonfils Photo Studio supplement the Quranic ayahs, poems, and prose by A.S. Pushkin, P.A. Vyazemsky, M.Yu. Lermontov, N.S. Gumilev, O.E. Mandelshtam and I.A. Bunin.

The exhibition invites you to discuss human and family, prayer and pilgrimage, water and bread, books and knowledge, life and death, and many other concepts through artistic images, religious traditions, and texts from Russian literary classics.

The project’s curator is Efim Rezvan, a Russian Arabist, professor, and deputy director of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography.
