Consistory
OBJECT DESCRIPTION
The Consistory is part of the Annunciation Cathedral Complex.
The Consistory is a governmental body in charge of managing the Orthodox Church’s affairs.
The Consistory’s building was constructed in the 18th century on the location of the former bishop’s stable yard from the 16th century. The Consistory is connected to the Konsistorskaya Tower by its south-eastern wing, and the building’s eastern side is built on the elements of the white stone fortress wall. As time passed, the two-storey brick building became made up of several buildings that were attached to one another at various points in time, creating an open quadrangle with an interior courtyard. From the north, the Consistory ends the line of the Complex of Prisutstvennye Mesta.
The Consistory’s main building is situated along the Proezd Sheinkmana Str. and has the arched passage to the interior courtyard. The Consistory’s building was rebuilt following the fire in 1815. The building’s façade is plastered, and windows on both storeys have architraves stylised in forms of the Russian-patterned architecture.
During the 19th century, the Ecclesiastical Department was housed here. During the Soviet period, the Ministry of Health of the TASSR worked in the building of Consistory.
Nowadays, the building is used for administrative purposes.
