The Natural History Museum is a structural subdivision of the Kazan Kremlin Museum-Reserve, located in the former Junker Military School building from the 19th century.
The museum’s exposition occupies twelve halls on two floors. The museum displays a large amount of interesting information from various fields of geological knowledge.
A meteorite collection, an interactive telescope, and cosmic scales will allow you to explore the mysteries of the universe. Mineralogical treasures from throughout the world, shining with crystal facets and polished slices, are collected in the ‘Minerals of the Earth’ hall. The halls ‘The Beginning of the Path’ and ‘The World of Ancient Life’ show hypotheses about the origins of life, the planet’s oldest inhabitants, the first vertebrates, and terrestrial plants. Collections of oil samples and reservoir rocks, a functioning model of a mud volcano, and an interactive well will tell about the black gold of our planet. The hall ‘Storeroom of the Subsoil’ provides information about Tatarstan’s minerals and methods of extraction.
The second floor’s palaeontological halls display the basic stages of vertebrate evolution: the first fish, the most ancient amphibians, beastlike lizards, marine reptiles, dinosaurs, representatives of the last major glaciations (mammoth, cave bear, woolly rhinoceros), and, finally, homo sapiens. Interactive blocks have been successfully embedded in the canvas of palaeontological samples, allowing young visitors to focus on different aspects of palaeontological knowledge in a playful manner. The ‘Prehistoric Aquarium’ will clearly demonstrate the size and diet of ancient fish; the ‘footprint’ will show palaeontological reconstruction of ancient animals; and the “palaeontological sandbox” will introduce to a palaeontologist’s field life. The museum’s exposition is accessible to visitors of all ages due to the clear presentation of information and the presence of tactile and interactive exhibits in each hall. Highlights tours and thematic guided tours, lectures, master classes, quests, quizzes, and other cultural and educational programs geared towards all age categories are regularly conducted in the museum. In addition, the museum has creative workshops and studios.
