Brethren's Building - Музей-заповедник «Казанский Кремль»

Brethren’s Building

OBJECT DESCRIPTION

The Brethren’s Building is a complex of interconnected buildings of cells, a Treasury House, and a gallery. The building is situated in the southwestern part of the Kazan Kremlin.

In 1670, a two-story building was constructed with square vaulted cells connected by a covered brick gallery. The building’s façade has cornices and belts, along with arched windows on the first and second floors. The building was built to accommodate the monks of Saviour’s Transfiguration Monastery.

In the 18th century, a three-storey treasury house with a part of the ancient monastery fence was added on the west side. Architraves embellish the arched windows, while ornate belts and cornices adorn the building’s façade. The building had a copper roof, which was widely used for roofing at that period.

Four strong buttresses support the L-shaped Brethren’s Building on its west and north faces.

To the current time, the building has been repaired and is utilised for administrative purposes.
