South Building of the Cannon Yard - Музей-заповедник «Казанский Кремль»

South Building of the Cannon Yard

OBJECT DESCRIPTION

The South Building is a component of the Cannon Yard Complex.

The building was constructed in the first half of the 17th century. These were manufacturing facilities with survived duct systems, which were required in the foundry utilising Dutch technology.

On the west side, the two-story building is adjacent to the fortress wall, and the eastern end of the building finishes with the brickwork of the destroyed building, clearly showing that the Cannon Yard Complex used to be U-shaped.

The building is covered with a wooden hewn roof with politsas (the lower, slightly sloping section of the roof that diverts rainwater away from the walls). Tall brick pipes with thickening at the ends, covered in peaked hoods, and finished with weathervanes in the shape of ensigns (metal flags) go out to the roof.

The façades are adorned with lesenes and an under-cornice belt made as a border. Windows with shallow arches are framed by fascia (horizontal setback) and a rectangular architrave shaped like a roller made of chiselled brick. Door apertures have a tiny crown (a semicircular brick protrusion above the aperture); the doors are iron-bound. Wooden galleries are adjacent to the north wall from the inside and outside. An outdoor gallery covered by an extension of the politsa.

The South Building was renovated in 1998-2005 and repeats the appearance of the building from the 17th century.
