Guided tour of the exhibition ‘The Kazan Volga Region: Images of Folk Culture’

The exhibition display comprises more than 40 reconstructed costume ensembles representing the Russian, Tatar, Bashkir, Mari, Mordvin, Udmurt and Chuvash peoples living in the Kazan Volga region during the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

All costume ensembles have been reconstructed on the basis of large‑scale scholarly and field research conducted in the Republic of Tatarstan across the collections of all regional, municipal and village museums. For the first time, exhibits of academic and cultural value held in private collections, village school museums and museums at local cultural centres in areas of historically compact settlement of the Volga peoples within Tatarstan were studied.
